Glasses' Sustainability: Donating Old Frames and More Eco-Friendly Tips
At Christopher Cloos, we’re committed to minimizing the negative impacts of manufacturing and worldwide logistics to the environment. So in this blog, we’ll guide you through how you as a customer can support our initiatives towards making a difference.
Our pledge to sustainability
The introduction of the biodegradable Cloos x Brady collection represents our first step towards a more responsible future. The production of this new collection focuses on the use of premium sustainable materials without sacrificing the flair for design, aesthetics, and craftsmanship— our core characteristics.
In October 2020, we’ve managed to turn 15% of our collection to biodegradable and eco-friendly materials. We are on our way towards making our collection 100% sustainable by Q1 2021. We have also commissioned our first monthly Sustainability Report to understand our footprint and use it as a benchmark for change.
Donating your old glasses
One of Christopher Cloos' latest initiatives in increasing our commitment to the environment is the creation of our latest promotional offers to new and existing customers. We started offering all customers 20% off their purchase in exchange for handing in a pair of frames. They can be worn and used, and we will still accept them, regardless of the brand. We can recycle the materials from these old frames through our sustainable manufacturing process, thus expanding the life-cycle of each pair of frames sold worldwide.
If you wish to donate your pair of worn glasses and receive a discount code for a new pair in exchange, please send an inquiry to email@example.com and we will advise you further.
Choosing responsibly made glasses
It is often hard to tell directly whether a pair of glasses is made from recycled materials or not. Thus, if you wish to buy a pair of responsibly-made glasses, we recommend that you do some research beforehand.
Most sustainable glasses are made from biodegradable acetate, as with the Cloos x Brady Collection, and can be recognized by being labeled "bio acetate" or "recycled acetate". At Christopher Cloos, we have applied the premium Italian M49® acetate which is a 100% eco-friendly, recyclable, and biodegradable Mazzucchelli product.

Caring and maintaining your glasses
We like to think if a pair of glasses as an investment, and by maintaining your glasses for many years, you also indirectly support glasses' sustainability. Here are some of the easiest and best tips for taking care of your glasses.
- Clean lenses regularly with either a lens spray or a drop of warm water and then dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth, like the one that is included with every Christopher Cloos frame.2
- Make sure to always keep your frames in a hard-shell case when not wearing them.
- Always lay glasses down with their lenses facing upward.
- Use both hands to put glasses on and take them off to avoid the hinges getting bent. If that should happen, check out our guide on how to fix bent glasses easily at home.
We hope that this guide will help and encourage you to choose responsibly made glasses in the future. Make sure to discover the biodegradable Cloos x Brady Collection right here.
